Tiberian Dawn is primarily a total conversion of the original “Command & Conquer” [1995] real-time strategy (RTS) game. It is being rebuilt as a modification, using the updated SAGE engine from Command & Conquer 3: Tiberium Wars. As the name implies, this mod will be focusing on the first Tiberian War taking place in the year 1995 in an alternate timeline of Earth, as portrayed in the original Command & Conquer game. Hardcore fans and developers of the genre later added the original project name ”Tiberian Dawn” back to the original C&C title, to prevent confusion with sequels and prequels. It was only appropriate that C&C 1’s return in this mod would lay claim to this title.
Two aspects inspired this mod project: The original “Command & Conquer”, and a certain piece of 'fan art', made by renowned member of the community and artist, “Godwin” Koay Feng Ji. In his artwork, Godwin re-imagined the world of C&C as we, fans of the franchise knew it, giving a more human, and realistic feel to this fictional war-game, and without eliminating elements that made the series what it is.
Disclaimer: Many debates exist, suggesting that past events may have occurred quite differently; but as we know, it is the victors who determine the history as we observe it. For that reason, along with this story containing fewer plot-holes necessary to explain, you will be provided with the series of events as defined by the Soviets, in the Great World War II of this (very different) planet Earth.
For those of you who do not know, the world of Command & Conquer takes place on Earth, but in an alternate timeline. World War II, as we know it never occurred. Instead of Nazi-Germany’s occupation of roughly ¼ of Europe, it was the Communist Soviet Union, which enveloped over ¾ of Europe in its Iron Curtain, under the Military rule of Josef Stalin. As this history states, with superior numbers and sheer force, the USSR gained control of the entire Eurasian super continent by 1946, against an allied nation front, and shortly thereafter, Josef Stalin mysteriously disappeared from the limelight, rumored to have been assassinated. He was soon succeeded by a heavily decorated, unnamed commander in the Soviet Republic. Decimated and oppressed, the Allied nations were easily absorbed into Mother Russia.
Many years later, in the early-to-mid 1980's, worldwide tolerance of Soviet control over Eurasia had long worn thin. Under the guise of worldwide post-war recovery efforts, the United States and rebel European patriots founded the Peace Corps. Officially, this organization was treated as a welcome charity for the USSR. Unofficially, the United States was using the Peace Corps as a “beachhead” for establishing European supply routes, state funding, and a covert military operation, known by few as Operation Group Echo: Black Ops 9.
In a remote part of north-central Africa, a shadow society, both ancient in history and Fascist in nature, stirred in secrecy. The Brotherhood of Nod, led by the Enigmatic and Prophetic Kane, had ensured that their existence remained unknown to the world, for long over 1000 years. With villainous unknown objectives and a recent, impressive spike in technological advances & funds, this Brotherhood had risen to a world superpower almost overnight. To promulgate the Brotherhood of Nod’s rise to power, many terrorist bombings and organized attacks were initiated around the globe. These unprovoked actions quickly gained the attention, and the emboldening of, another developing world power.
By 1990, thanks to the efforts of emboldened leaders in this secretly reforming European-US alliance, Black Ops 9 had evolved into the world’s most well equipped military. Many Allied officials had risen to influential roles in the USSR-claimed European government states, and were reporting an unusual thinning of the Soviet occupiers. With this convenient Intel at hand, BO9 began covert military operations throughout Europe, in an effort to overpower those soviets who still remained in control. Their efforts were ironically swift, regaining most of western and central Europe within a matter of weeks. Furthermore, the Allies’ influential leaders had gained sufficient control over the world media to keep them oblivious to these military successes. To the USSR’s shock and awe, in the spring of 1994, The US and European leaders rose up as one, to announce their pact as a reborn United Nations.
The Soviet Union was not putting up much of a fight. Intel from the UN suggested that its government leadership, as well as much of its funds and infrastructure, had been severely compromised some time in the past decade. In their state of decay the Red Army was forced to regress back inside their own original borders that had existed prior to the war.
The United Nations had gained the upper hand in regaining control of their land. As a tactical advantage they had targeted the independently controlled Middle East, for it was the presumed source of several reported terrorist bombings. They planned to usurp one Saddam Hussein from control of Iraq. They had hoped to gain a tactical beachhead in their push to Russia, and to confirm Hussein’s alleged ties with a mysterious Brotherhood of Nod. This “Brotherhood” was suggested by their Intel to be funding these world terrorist movements. Meanwhile, with much of the world’s wealth now in the hands of the UN, funding was also being funneled into the USSR in the attempts to initiate a coup from within.
On the eve of their victory in Operation: Desert Storm, Intel was leaked to the USSR media, severely compromising the division’s operations. The botched Black Ops 9 mission exposed the UN’s military power. The Intel was not provided in time to save USSR, though. By August of 1995, the Russian’s fear of the UN-sanctioned military on their doorstep, in tandem with the UN funded coup, had raised massive civil unrest within the Soviet Union. Numerous riots were reported across the Republic. Uprisings further weakened the already depleted Soviet government, and the nation was on the verge of social and economical collapse. On October 12, 1995, under the accord of the United Nations Global Defense Act (UNGDA), commanded by one United States’ acting Lieutenant General Mark Jamison Shepherd, the Global Defense Initiative was founded. As their only means of recovery, the Russian government was among the first of several world nations, who swore allegiance to the powerful new GDI Military organization. With a renewed vigor, GDI then set its eyes squarely upon the Brotherhood of Nod.
Under Nod's charismatic, mysterious leader, Kane, the brotherhood’s superior technology seemed destined to rival the military force of GDI, commanded by General Shepherd. And then... IT arrived. In the winter of 1995, a meteor carrying an unknown substance fell to Earth, decimating a small city in Italy, to ruins. This mysterious green crystal had begun settling into the soil and growing exponentially, like an exotic weed. The “plant” was dubbed Tiberium, soon following its concussive discovery. Its name was taken from Italy’s Tiber River, near which it collided with the Earth. Not long thereafter, noted scientists had determined that Tiberium could be harvested for the precious metals and minerals within, which had been leeched from Earth’s soil. With the Brotherhood of Nod’s superior technology, they quickly developed effective harvesting methods, which could be used to monopolize on this vast wealth.
There was, however, a deafening flaw in the scientists’ optimism. The same scientists studying this quickly spreading space-borne plant had reported breathing problems. Within mere weeks of Tiberium’s discovery, over 98% of the researchers were deceased. The study of the Tiberium was poisoning and killing the very scientists researching it, whose bodies had been deemed “infected” with veins of the same green crystal. It was clear that Tiberium’s arrival on Earth would surely affect all of us, on a global scale. But for good or bad, nobody yet knew.
Know this: Both factions view Tiberium differently, Nod views it as their path to glory, to... divination, while GDI views it as an anomaly; an alien threat.
This is primarily what Tiberian Dawn is about... Now, the only question left to ask is:
Which faction are you going to side with?
